Arnold Cornell Green
1918 – 2009

Arnold Cornell Green, age 90, passed away at home on the morning of November 7th, surrounded by his family and friends.
Cornell was born in a government surplus tent in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to James Hyrum and Myrtle Ward Green on November 29, 1918. He was the 8th of nine children (five boys and four girls). Raised in the St. Louis area, he loved to run and said he was the fastest kid on the block. They were so poor that for many meals they only had brown syrup and bread. A long-time member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he served many missions throughout his life including a mission without purse or script to the Missouri Ozarks at age 18.
Cornell served in the U. S. Army in World War II, first as a Morse code operator, and later completed Officers Candidate School, becoming a “90 day wonder”. He joined the Army Air Corp, and flew B-17's and B-29's.
After the war, he served a mission to New Zealand. He loved the Maori people and his time spent teaching the gospel.
He married the love of his life, his eternal companion, Anna Lucille Jensen in the Hawaiian Temple on November 13, 1948. They raised five children: four girls and one boy. Together they served three Stake Missions and three missions to the Philippines.
Singing was one of the many loves of his life. He had a beautiful tenor voice and sang as a 1st tenor in the Tabernacle Choir for 20 years. He also sang in the finest double mixed quartet of their time, formed from members of the choir simply calling themselves “The Group.” He never refused an invitation or an opportunity to sing. Recently, Cornell sang happy birthday to a lady in a local restaurant. As he was leaving, he overheard her announce it was her birthday, but she didn’t want anyone to sing.
He served in many callings in the L.D.S. Church including Seminary teacher, High Priest Group leader, and in a Ward Bishopric.
Cornell was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille, who went to prepare a place for them in 2005.
Survived by his younger sister, Ella Green Czirban, five children: Mira (Steven) Leffler, Diane (Gordon K.) Hinckley, Richard Cornell (Jane Louise) Green, Marianne Green, and Christine (Dan) Conover, 31 grandchildren and soon to be 50 great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held Thursday, November 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 Highland Drive, and Friday from 11 to 11:45 a.m. at the Union Fort 6th Ward, 6710 S 1300 E, in Midvale, Utah.
Interment will be in the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 Highland Drive.
